'I didn't want to steal Sonny's thunder': Paul Gallen no-shows announcement of SBW clash image

After years of speculation, Paul Gallen and Sonny Bill Williams will finally face off in the boxing ring.

Announced Tuesday, the former footy icons will settle their beef once and for all in a bout this July, in Sydney.

But the shenanigans are already well underway, with Gallen pulling out of an appearance for the announcement at the last minute, taking to social media to claim he wanted his opponent to have all the attention.

Paul Gallen no-shows announcement of SBW clash

Paul Gallen and Sonny Bill Williams announced their long-awaited boxing clash Tuesday, but only one man was in attendance, with Gallen no-showing the event.

The Cronulla Sharks legend posted to Instagram during the event, explaining that he wanted to waste his opponent's time, in retaliation for what he believes has been Williams controlling the lead up to the fight announcement.

"Right about now I'm supposed to be at the press conference for me vs Sonny Bill Williams, but clearly I'm not," Gallen said.

"You see this whole negotiation process has been about Sonny, so I thought that I'd leave it that way.

"I wanted to fight earlier in the year, Sonny wanted to fight later in the year because it didn't suit me, so we're fighting later in the year - I wanted to fight over 10 three-minute rounds, he wanted eight, then he wanted eight two-minute rounds, so now we're doing two-minute rounds.

"Everything is about Sonny, Sonny gets what Sonny wants so I didn't want to steal his thunder today.

"Sonny can go and say whatever he wants to say, Sonny is a big enough star to carry this fight all on his own.

"I'm just going to turn up on the night and give it a good ol' crack.

"I hope you feel like I've wasted your time, mate, because I feel like you've wasted my time the last 10 years, but finally you've built up the courage to jump in the ring with me."

The two adversaries will fight on the card on July 16, at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena.
