European heavyweights Panathinaikos and KK Partizan are heading to Australia.

On Monday, the NBL confirmed it will host this year's Pavlos Giannakopoulos Tournament, which will see the aforementioned outfits face off alongside the Sydney Kings and Adelaide 36ers in a four-team event.

Panathinaikos and Partizan – of Greece and Serbia, respectively – will face off on September 18 at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena.

All four teams will then do battle at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena from September 21-22.

NBL director Nikola Milivojevic highlighted the significance of the tournament, labelling it a "huge honour".

"This is an extraordinary moment for the NBL and basketball fans in Australia," Milivojevic said.

"To have two of Europe’s biggest teams competing in a tournament of this calibre, along with two of the biggest clubs in Australian basketball, the Sydney Kings and Adelaide 36ers, is not only a reflection of the NBL’s growing global reputation, but underlines the increasing level of passion and interest Australians have for the game.

“This once-in-a-lifetime event enhances the strong relationship the NBL has formed with the two EuroLeague clubs Panathinaikos and KK Partizan.

"To be hosting the Pavlos Giannakopoulos Tournament is a huge honour, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it."

With strong Greek and Serbian diasporas in Australia, the tournament is set to earn plenty of attention.

Panathinaikos' current team features plenty of former NBA talent, including Kendrick Nunn, Cedi Osman and Juancho Hernangomez.

Frank Ntilikina and Aleksej Pokuševski, meanwhile, headline Partizan's squad.

Pre-registration for tickets is already open, with fans who sign up early given priority access on May 19.

General public tickets will go on sale on May 22.
