Buku Khamis is weighing up his future at the Western Bulldogs despite being contracted until the end of 2026, with his manager confirming the versatile tall would consider a move if greater opportunity emerged elsewhere.

The 24-year-old swingman hasn’t played since Round 16 and has grown frustrated at his lack of senior opportunities under Luke Beveridge, despite making 14 appearances earlier in the season.

“If he is not playing games, he reaches a threshold”

Speaking to The Herald Sun, Khamis’ manager Ray Purcell made it clear the talented utility needs regular football. “If the right opportunity came up, then he would go. But it has to be a club where he is going to play,” Purcell said.

“He can have a very long and productive career if he’s in an environment where he is playing games, or he can have another year like this and he’s on the shelf.”

Purcell added: “Everyone felt this would be his breakout season and he’s a huge talent who keeps improving, but he’s got to play games.”

The Bulldogs remain keen to keep Khamis and have discussed extending his deal. But with key-position depth already under pressure, and fellow NGA product Jamarra Ugle-Hagan also out of contract, the potential loss of Khamis would be a serious hit.

“He has the capacity to play forward or back,” Purcell said. “What he needs is consistency of games in a position at the highest level. It’s how you get better.”
