Sydney’s hard-fought win over Carlton has come at a cost, with forwards Joel Amartey and Justin McInerney both set to miss games after coming under the AFL Match Review Officer’s microscope.

Amartey has been handed a three-match suspension for a brutal bump on Blues defender Jordan Boyd late in the contest.

The incident, which left Boyd concussed, was assessed as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact, a combination that left the Swans with little room for appeal.

McInerney penalised for Silvagni bump

Teammate Justin McInerney will also serve a one-game ban following a high shot on Jack Silvagni in the second quarter. The Carlton forward had just collected the ball when McInerney clipped him high with a shoulder, leaving Silvagni dazed and briefly off his feet.

The act was deemed careless, medium impact and high contact by the MRO.

Though Silvagni passed an HIA test, he was subbed off later due to groin soreness. McInerney’s recent record didn’t help his case; just two months ago, he served a three-week ban for a hit that concussed Brisbane’s Brandon Starcevich.

Fox Footy’s Jon Ralph said the latest incident looked more clear-cut: “I think he just didn’t make the play on the ball.”

Swans coach Dean Cox acknowledged Amartey’s likely suspension but declined to elaborate on McInerney’s case: “That’ll be in the AFL’s hands now.”
