If you're new to AFL, there are plenty of things to learn – one of them being how matches are structured and timed.

How long is an AFL quarter?

A single quarter comprises 20 minutes of actual game time.

However, 'time-on' is added for any stoppages, including injuries and throw-ins.

This means each quarter generally lasts for 25 to 30 minutes.

How long is an AFL game? 

Players have 20 minutes to recover at half-time, while there are also six-minute breaks after the first and third quarters.

This adds up to an overall run-time of just under three hours for an AFL game, from start to finish.
