Three-time Hawthorn premiership winner Luke Breust has confirmed he will retire at the end of the AFL season, bringing down the curtain on a decorated career spanning more than a decade and 300 games.
The 33-year-old informed teammates of his decision on Thursday, with this weekend’s match marking his 307th appearance, drawing him level with current Hawks coach Sam Mitchell for third-most games played in the club’s history.
A career of goals, glory and guidance
Breust, a dual All-Australian and five-time club leading goalkicker, has kicked more than 550 goals and sits seventh on Hawthorn’s all-time list of scorers. He is also one of just nine players to reach the 300-game milestone for the club.

In a statement, Hawks football boss Rob McCartney hailed Breust as “one of Hawthorn’s genuine greats”, adding: “Whether it was hitting the scoreboard individually or bringing teammates into the game, Luke’s ability to contribute consistently at a high level over such a long period of time has been one of his trademark attributes.”
McCartney also praised Breust’s influence off the field, citing his leadership and mentorship of younger players as a lasting part of his legacy.
Breust will finish his career alongside wife Anthea and daughter Freya, with the Hawks confirming the family will remain an important part of the club’s fabric long after his final siren.
