Collingwood midfielder Jordan De Goey’s frustrating season has taken another hit, with the premiership star concussed at training on Tuesday in a cruel twist just as he edged closer to a return from injury.

The 28-year-old, who hasn’t played since Round 9 due to an Achilles issue, was participating in a full training session when he copped accidental high contact during a fundamentals drill, from none other than vice-captain Brayden Maynard, who is set to return this week from a foot injury.

“Jordy got a concussion in the ‘fundamentals’, so he left the track,” coach Craig McRae told reporters. “It’s a sad week for Jordy, he’s just starting to get there, and he’s obviously going to be in the (concussion) protocols for 10–14 days.”

Maynard returns, others under a cloud

While De Goey heads into concussion protocols, Maynard has been confirmed for Friday night’s blockbuster against Carlton at the MCG, a fierce rivalry McRae says the club fully embraces.

Veteran Steele Sidebottom is in doubt due to illness, while forward Bobby Hill remains under watch after missing last weekend’s game for personal reasons.

“It was great to see Bobby back today. We haven’t seen him around for a few days, he trained really well,” McRae said. “He’s a day-to-day thing at the moment, we’re not sure if he’ll be available.”

De Goey has only managed five senior games this year, and just 13 in 2023 due to injury. With finals on the horizon, Collingwood will be hoping this latest setback is his last.
