Cody Weightman’s 2025 campaign is officially over before it began, with the Western Bulldogs confirming on Tuesday that the livewire forward has been moved to the club’s inactive list due to a long-term knee injury.
The 24-year-old hasn’t featured at all this season after undergoing surgery in February to treat a rare congenital condition called bipartite patella, a condition involving a false joint within the kneecap.
Hopes of a return later this year were dashed following another round of surgery in May, with the club opting to shut him down entirely.

“The vacancy will now open a second spot on the Bulldogs’ list ahead of the mid-season draft on Wednesday night,” the club said in a statement.
Setback after setback ends Weightman’s year
Weightman’s knee troubles have plagued his 2025 pre-season and beyond, and despite some optimism earlier in the year, his body simply hasn’t responded well enough.
After multiple setbacks in his recovery, the Bulldogs made the call to free up a list spot and focus on bolstering their depth ahead of the mid-year draft.

While the Bulldogs lose an energetic forward known for his aerial flair and goal sense, the decision to go inactive opens a chance to reinforce their squad as they push into the second half of the season.
Weightman, who’s played 55 AFL games and kicked 74 goals since debuting in 2020, will now shift focus to a full recovery in time for 2026.
The club hasn’t confirmed whether further surgery or extended rehabilitation will be needed beyond this year.
