AFL Insider: The AFL has its priorities right image

The debate over whether the Brisbane Lions deserve a priority pick in this year’s draft took centre stage after The Rover unveiled the AFL’s plans earlier this week.

The most common response was that they shouldn’t get one, with commentators and ex-players taking the tough guy tack of “they need to stand on their own two feet.”

Well, they can’t. In fact we don’t think they’ve even got two feet.

We all know how much the league loves its non-Victorian teams and they aren’t going to let one die a long, slow death, especially a club that won three straight flags not that long ago and had claims on ‘the greatest ever side’.

To do so would be admitting the national competition doesn’t work, so there’s no choice but to give them a priority pick, plus a bucketload of cash and anything else that can be slipped under the table.

The league will do everything it can to pull the Lions off the endangered list. If they didn’t then you might as well call in the American dentist now.
