AFL Insider: Bomber unlikely to drop anything explosive image

Mark ‘Bomber’ Thompson is releasing his autobiography in a few days time, and while it may be a good holiday read, it’s unlikely to come close to telling the whole truth behind Essendon’s WADA woes.

Thompson played in three premierships with the Bombers and coached two at Geelong before heading back to Windy Hill, right in time for the supplements scandal that started in 2012, so there’s plenty to write about that will interest fans of both clubs.

But we can guarantee there won’t be much said of the connection between the employment of Dean ‘The Weapon’ Robinson at Geelong at the end of 2006, and the Cats’ successful era that started the very next season, similar to the immediate turnaround enjoyed by the Sea Eagles when Robinson started at Manly two years earlier.

It’s amazing how little has been made of the relationship between the former coach and the disgraced fitness guru (always with off-sider Stephen Dank in tow) who went to Essendon on Thompson’s recommendation.

The AFL has kept quiet about the shot in the arm that took the Cats from mediocre to magnificent, and don’t expect Thompson to break that silence soon.
