The Melbourne coach seat - being vacated by Simon Goodwin - will be filled assistant coach Troy Chaplin for the remainder of the AFL season.

Demons president Brad Green made the announcement in a letter to members informing them of Goodwin's sacking.

Chaplin has been an assistant coach at Melbourne since October 2016, shortly after his AFL playing career wrapped up at Richmond after starting at Port Adelaide.

"Simon will finish with the club effective immediately and assistant coach Troy Chaplin, will step in as caretaker coach for the remainder of the 2025 season," Green said in the letter to Demons members.

"Troy has been with the club since the end of 2016 and is well equipped and ready to guide the program over the next few weeks."

Green made it clear the Demons didn't already have a permanent head coach picked out and the process to find one would begin shortly.

"We will now commence our search for the next senior coach of the Melbourne Football Club," he said.

"As you all know, this is a crucial appointment and one which will significantly shape the future of our club.

"The board will assemble a panel to lead the search for our next senior coach. We will confirm the full structure of the panel early next week"

Chaplin made his debut for the Power in 2005 and played 140 games, before crossing to the Tigers for 75 games, playing his 200th game in 2015.

He was named AFL assistant coach of the year for his work at the Demons in 2022.
