When you lose by seven points, it's safe to say that many mistakes or opportunities are going to be over-analysed.

But for Gold Coast in Sunday's Expansion Cup, two horrible gaffes arguably cost the team victory against GWS at ENGIE Stadium.

In the closing moments of the first quarter, young Suns forward Jed Walter could have put his team up by 28 points.

But from 10m out, basically straight in front, Walter casually strode in to shank the kick for a behind.

Earlier in the first quarter, defender Mac Andrew gave away a 50m penalty as Jesse Hogan was lining up for goal from the arc.

As Hogan started his run-up to kick, Andrew suddenly abandoned his position on the mark instantly giving away the 50m penalty and subsequently a guaranteed goal.

However, audio did emerge where it can be heard that a player yelled out 'play on', which Andrew clearly thought was the umpire's call.

Initially it was thought to be a GWS player trying to fool Andrew, but it's understood it was a Gold Coast player trying to influence the umpire to wave play on.

Both incidents cost the Suns a goal and defeat to the Giants could be crucial when it comes to the end of the season and Gold Coast are scrapping for a place in the final eight.
