Geelong talent Oliver Dempsey has been fined by the AFL for staging during the Cats' win against Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night.

The AFL docked Dempsey $1500 for the incident that occurred in the third quarter, with the fine reduced to $1000 if the player puts in an early guilty plea.

After taking a mark opposed to Demon defender Tom McDonald in the third term, Dempsey threw his head back theatrically and landed on the turf.

With no injury suffered, Dempsey got to his feet and continued to play by handballing the ball to Jeremy Cameron.

MORE AFL:

It is the second time this season a player has been booked by the AFL Match Review Officer for staging with Essendon's Ben Hobbs being cited last week.

However, the Bomber midfielder was exonerated from the charge after a written submission to the AFL Tribunal claiming his neck was hurt.

Last season, Melbourne defender Steven May was given a staging fine after ensuring his head hit the turf in a tackle.
